TH6.13 Post-Operative Pain Management Following Emergency Laparotomy

Abstract Aims Post-operative pain is a common yet challenging presentation. Although an expected part of the acute recovery phase, uncontrolled associated with poorer patient experience, delayed functional and increased morbidity. Up to 40% patients report severe that negatively impacts on their post-operative recovery. We aimed determine whether complications length hospital admission were choice analgesic agents. Methods conducted retrospective observational study 42 who underwent laparotomy between March – May 2021. Data was extracted from electronic medical records summarised in Microsoft Excel. Statistical analysis performed using Chi-Squared Mann-Whitney U tests. Results 22 (52.4%) experienced whilst 20 (47.6%) did not. In those without complications, greater proportion received Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) compared (17, 85% vs 11, 50%, p = 0.02). also observed trend towards use Oxycodone (11, 55% 6, 27%) Meptazinol 7, 32%) (p= 0.07 0.13 respectively). The significantly shorter for PCA (median 11 days) not 15 (U 111.5, 0.04). Conclusions This emphasises importance effective analgesia reducing improving speed suggest should be encouraged following emergency laparotomies.
